Government-owned Media Front Page News: Agong Allegedly Disapproves of Bersih

Following my post, All Hope Lost for Electoral Reform? Not so fast, the government-owned print media had a field day running the “Agong rejected Bersih” story as their headline news (or at least it showed up in the first page).
Remember 6 days ago, when the government-owned media relegated news(oops, I meant ‘lies’) regarding the Bersih gathering to the inside pages? There was no significant mention of the Bersih gathering on the front pages then, so why are the newspapers suddenly so interested in this story now?

Most of this blog’s readers should already know why, since the government deems it fit to tell you what news you should read and what you should not.
I point this out again so that people who read those papers, will continue to think critically of what was read, and not just depend on those government-owned newspapers as their only source of news. And then educate your friends and loved ones of the lies they are potentially reading and believing.

If you can afford it, Malaysiakini.com has pretty good news coverage of the items you will never see printed. Otherwise, read more blogs, and let the collective wisdom of blogs guide you.

Have a great weekend all!

I suggest ‘Government Enslaved Media’ (GEM) as an alternative for times when we want to be snarkier about the subject. The acronym is catchy and has a subtle reference to the gems of objective news that bloggers pick out.

The enslaved part because frankly, even the most anti-establishment minded editor has no choice but to obey the decrees from up above.

    Scott,
Talking about editors, I really do wonder how they feel when the government is clearly asking them to print lies or half truths.

For example, I am sure there were reporters out in the field during the Bersih rally (I saw a Star photographer), so they can’t say that they don’t have the right information, whereby 4000 was the number of marchers.

Perhaps they justify it by thinking its for the greater good of the nation (based on the government’s point of view).
