Kimma Lodges Police Report Against Jeff Ooi

Over the weekend, a police report was lodged by Kimma (Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress) against blogger Jeff Ooi for his appearance on al-Jazeera.
The police report alleged that Jeff Ooi had defamed the country, government, and the police. It was also alleged that Jeff’s statements was seditious and caused racial tension in the country.

Three police reports were lodged against blogger Jeff Ooi for allegedly defaming the country, government and police force.

The reports were lodged by the Malaysian Islamic Consumers Association, Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress and Pertubuhan Seni Silat Ikatan Kalam Malaysia against a statement issued by Ooi to an Al Jazeera reporter. The statement was allegedly broadcast on YouTube following an illegal gathering on Nov 10 organised by a coalition of opposition parties and non-governmental organisations calling itself Bersih.

The police reports were lodged at the Sentul police headquarters yesterday about 4.30pm.

The complainants want Ooi to be investigated, alleging that the interview given to Al Jazeera not only tarnished the image of the country but was also seditious and caused racial tension.

Ooi is also alleged to have given inaccurate information to Al Jazeera in stating that the police used unnecessary force in dispersing the demonstrators.

Why is this police report stupid? First, they are filing frivolous police reports, therefore wasting police resources. Which indirectly means that they are wasting the tax-payer’s money. Read Nat’s excellent deconstruction of this news report.

One of the reasons this blog exists is to keep record of the stupid things that were said and done by various individuals and organizations.
I am glad to say that there are some of the news-worthy items that involved Kimma since 2005, and they have consistently said or done the darndest things annually with consistency of the floods on the east coast.

19th September 2005: Kimma seeks Malay status for Indian Muslims
It was reported in thestar.com.my that Kimma wants all Indian Muslims in the country to be considered Malays.
Kimma cited provisions in the Federal Constitution, which stated that a Muslim who could speak Bahasa Malaysia and practice the Malay culture was regarded a Malay.
The contents of the motion, among others, stated: “The Indian Muslims adopt the three elements but still cannot get the Malay status”.

However, Kimma adviser Thasleem Mohd Ibrahim said that although the Indian Muslims could be Umno members, many were not keen because they wanted to maintain their culture and mother tongue.

The statement by Mohd Ibrahim that “many were not keen because they wanted to maintain their culture and mother tongue” already contradicted their justification that “The Indian Muslims adopt the three elements but still cannot get the Malay status”.
I found it really arrogant then that Kimma thinks they speak for all Indian Muslims in the country, and also very stupid because they think practicing someone else’s culture would let them change their racial composition.

5th March 2006: Kimma seeks affiliation with UMNO
During the party’s working council, Kimma (Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress) had decided to submit a memorandum to seek affiliation with UMNO. The party’s president, Amir Amsaa Alla Pitchay is reported as saying that the decision was taken because “Indian Muslims in the country have no representation at the state or federal level”.
True to previous form, Kimma manages to contradict themselves again the next day by stating that if they couldn’t join UMNO, it was alright for them.

6th March 2006: Kimma to settle with Bumiputera status
After the horrible truth dawned on them that religion does not equate to race (and after being ignored by the government for the past 28 years), Kimma apparently changed their stance and stated that they would settle with having bumiputera status. Kimma’s acting president, Syed Ibrahim Kader (what happened to Alla Pitchay from the previous day?) stated that this was important because their community would “enjoy privileges in education, socio-economic welfare, employment and such.”

From this past 3 incidents, it is clear that Kimma is not really interested in being Malay, or joining UMNO. They are just interested in the fruits and benefits of being declared Bumiputera and enjoy all the privileges of being accorded the status.

Keeping in mind Kimma’s ultimate goal, I am guessing the police report made against Jeff Ooi is to suck up to UMNO. Perhaps UMNO will take them more seriously the next time they submit a memorandum to become Bumiputera.

What should we do?
If you agree with me that Kimma has an ulterior motive in lodging this police report, then let us bloggers unite and respond!
No, we shall not boycott mamak stalls, or your local kedai runcit, because really, that’s just too much to ask. And they are possibly not registered with Kimma.
Instead, let us start blogging about Kimma and the things that Kimma has said or done. Let’s do this so that when someone googles Kimma, people will find out the real truth about Kimma. So far, only 2/10 of the search results are about Kimma the Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress, so let’s make it 10/10!
