Morons of Parliament: Demolish Christian Statues, Destroy the Crosses
November 23, 2007
Today, I will introduce you to 2 Morons of Parliament (MP). These 2 MPs recently talked smack in Parliament about Christian missionary schools and even suggested demolishing Christian statues and crosses. The text can be found here on Lucia Lai’s blog, but I will just translate the entire page to the best of my ability. If you want to read the Hansard, please download it from the parliament website.
The Sri Gading moron is on the left, while the Parit Sulong moron is on the right. They make such a cute couple, don’t you think?
Tuan Syed Hood bin Syed Edros [Parit Sulong]: [Some unrelated stuff first] Yang Di-Pertua, I would like to touch on a matter regarding the Ministry of Education, which are Christian missionary schools like Convent, La Salle, Methodist, and so forth. I was made to understand that the Board of Directors at these schools are partially administered by churches in foreign countries, for example in the Vatican City. I was also made to understand that the application to build a ’surau’ in some of these schools had to go through the approval of these Board of Directors whereby they are partially administered by the church. Therefore, it shames me that the school administrations are still controlled by the church. I was also made to understand that many Muslim parents send their kids to these schools, and that they have complained that sometimes, the school is started with church songs. I do not know if this is true, but what I discovered from these parents are the display of religious symbols. I feel disappointed that in an Islamic country, Malaysia, if I go to a convent school, the statue of St. Mary is displayed in the front of the school.
Datuk Haji Mohamad bin Haji Aziz [Sri Gading]: [Stands up]
Tuan Syed Hood bin Syed Edros [Parit Sulong]: Please proceed, Yang Berhormat for Sri Gading.
Timbalan Yang di-Pertua [Datuk Dr. Yusof bin Yacob]: Yes, Yang Berhormat for Sri Gading.
Datuk Haji Mohamad bin Haji Aziz [Sri Gading]: I am not shocked at all, Yang Berhormat for Parit Sulong. It’s not just a simple question. The question is, why has this happened? One. During the last Hari Raya, I was told by a father, when Aidilfitri was celebrated, these types of schools were not closed. Thank you.
Tuan Syed Hood bin Syed Edros [Parit Sulong]: Not only statues, but fellow Yang Berhormat, go and see for yourselves, Christian crosses are displayed in front of schools. I do not understand the Ministry of Education, did the officers not see that, or is it our policy to allow such a thing? Nevertheless, I, as a responsible person to my religion, race, and country, I state my views that these statues need to be demolished, these crosses need to be destroyed and church influences in these schools need to be stopped. Also, the funds that are collected at these schools. Do we have a report? If possible, the ministry should reveal the funds for these schools. I was made to understand that these schools are also sponsored by the church. continued next page…
Ok. Dear readers, do you have friends that studied in Christian missionary schools? Heck, in Ipoh where I grew up, I’ve got friends studying in these schools and I have never heard of schools starting with Christian church songs. If it did happen, don’t you think it would have already created a bigger controversy? Instead, we have to hear such things from a relative nobody from the Parit. Wait, I meant the MP from Parit Sulong. And with ZERO evidence to boot. Hey, since you’re such a responsible Muslim man, why don’t you prevent the influence of other religions in this country by destroying the churches and temples in Malaysia? Oh wait, I forgot, we are already doing that, aren’t we?
Then the joker from Sri Gading just had to pitch in with his 2 cents, and says that he knows some parent who claimed that the school was not closed during Hari Raya. I guess when UMNO scheduled their General Assembly during Deepavali, that’s ok right? The message to us Malaysians is: If it doesn’t concern Islam, I don’t want to know about it.
The people we vote into Parliament sometimes, eh? Anyway, ZERO evidence of such a thing happening. It’s like me saying that I heard from my friend’s brother’s sister-in-law who claimed that she saw a hantu susu before. Therefore, it must be true! Right…
Then Mr. Taliban from Parit Sulong is telling everyone that these Christian statues and crosses need to be destroyed. I guess Mr. Taliban was sleeping when Badawi addressed the UMNO General Assembly just a mere few weeks ago on religious sensitivities.
These missionary schools have educated countless number of law-abiding citizens and luminaries that contribute immensely to the country and society. Certainly, these citizens have contributed more to this country than those MPs from Sri Gading and Parit Sulong have, and ever will. This nation does not need morons like these to represent us in Parliament. Say ‘tak nak’ to morons.

Thanks so much for posting that. I love the way they say these mission schools have foreign influence from abroad… and say it like it’s a bad thing. If anything, most of the leaders around graduated from these mission schools, incl. some of the ministers in the Cabinet. These mission schools are making our students smarter, and not to mention, better English speakers than our dear Minister of Information! Oh, no! How appalling!
And yes, statues & crosses… who cares about respect for other religions? Destroy the Christian infidel! We can say this with impunity, we are Islam!
Klaw: As with all religions, there will be extremists. To be fair, there are a lot of sensible Muslims in Malaysia who are not hell bent on destroying other religions.

say, these 2 morons really do make a nice couple!
thanks for the translation. i’ll update it in my blog.
actually, wasn’t it that there were some UMNOputera or even UMNO ministers who were educated in some of these missionary schools?
i studied in a convent school for more than 10 years and yet i never came across singing of church songs in school! we did sing the song ‘bless our school’ during assembly (without any mention of jesus or mary). surely ‘bless’ is not reserved for christians only!

“It’s like me saying that I heard from my friend’s brother’s sister-in-law who claimed that she saw a hantu susu before. Therefore, it must be true! Right…”
Spot on. The statues, crosses have been there a long long time. Did they just recently started to use their eyes?

Sheena,
These schools are probably part of the worldwide La Sallian community. But that doesn’t mean that they are administered by foreigners. Most of the brothers that used to lead these schools have already passed on, so they should have asked the headmasters about this.
Lucia,
Look no further than our DPM, who studied in St. John’s Institution.
tingtitlei,
The Sri Gading one is already famous, the guy from Parit still a nobody la
sharkgila,
Well said. I think that these crosses do not mean much for the students that study there, and are probably there because of the school history and respect for the architecture of the school. And actually, a LOT of former missionary schools are now Sekolah Kebangsaan. Not part of some private school.

no one is forcing Muslim kids to these school - kalau tak suka don’t go.

Okay, first off this is complete and TOTAL BULLSHIT.
I am a Muslim and obviously a Malay woman. I went to SRK Convent Klang and then SMK Convent Klang. And everything those two fucking idiots said is completely false and unfounded.
My school was originally named the ‘St. Infant Jesus Christ Convent’ back when the Brits were around and when they left, the nuns stayed on. Of course the teaching evolve and when I went into Form 1 (year 1999), there was only one nun left.
What used to be the church in the school have been converted to the main hall. What used to be the altar where people worship, there was a stage build over. There was no more statues of Jesus Christ anywhere though on the wall where the small ones used to hang, one can see the outline of it due to years of it hanging there. Then when they repainted the school, it was gone.
There is still a big cross at the front of the school, no one ever found the reason to complain. Its part of our British/Malaya heritage anyways. When I was in school we never sang any “church songs” during the assembly. We did “baca doa” then after that in rotation of weeks another prefect will read the Christian prayers, then another week Hindu prayers and another week Buddisht while students who are not of that religion will stand in silence of respect.
I never view this as a part of pushing another religion onto my beliefs. I was never offended by it. Its just the way it is.
Then bout the school not closing during Raya….I am not even going to comment on that because that is BEYOND stupid. We do however have holidays on Good Fridays because Convent does have Christian traditions and there’s nothing offensing my Muslim “sensibilities” when I was given Friday off. The more day offs, the better is is. You get no complaints from any sane student.
Convent schools all over Malaysia are significant part of our British/Malaya history and having been part of the Convent life, I find it very offensive and incrediblly stupid of them to make such statements.
Religion is a set of beliefs. You choose what to belief. Just because you think your religion is better than other people does not give you the right to condemn and push your religion onto other people. Stupid fucking politicians.
Klaw: Well said. I like how your school helped promote diversity and respect for other religions by rotating the “baca doa” for different religions.
November 24, 2007 at 9:40 pm
bravo, constant drama. to borrow your words, “those two fucking idiots” should subscribe to the principle that if the eye should cause one to sin then gouge out the eye; if the hand should cause one to sin then chop off the hand. for it is better to be handicapped and pass this world sinless than to possess that which causes one to sin and be condemned to hell. in the case of those two fucking idiots their brains are so sinfully screwed up they’d better have their brains removed before they succumb to eternal damnation (that is they are not already so assigned).
but seriously, nobody forces any muslim to patronise a (once upon a time) christian missionary school. muslims here have tons of sekolah agama and sekolah asrama sponsored by non muslim tax payers (note: wang haram from casion and arak etc) who have nothing to say about such employment of good money. if the cross and religious statues scare you, go cover your heads and eyes and bury yourselves in the pretensious cocoon of your own agama schools.
my god, who was that muslim head of a muslim nation who married an european christian? < removed >
i have two apartments whose entrances face each other directly. one i stay in, the other i rented to a muslim family from a local royalty. i do wonder if my tenant has lost faith or is beginning to doubt his faith because my house is christ-blest and each time he comes out of his apartment he has to face the crucifix hung prominently on my door.
yang bodoh morons of parliament, do you ever wonder if you muslims are really such weaklings that you need to be buried beneath everything islam? if humanity was indeed that fragile, does it imply that the non muslims in this “islamised” country are non human beings who can still stick to their faith despite the propoganda and waves of attempts to islamise so many aspects of our lives?
come on, yang bodoh, admit it, you’ve just insulted your own kind to the most degrading and despicable of disgust. time you offer yourselves up to the taliban to be the next beneficiary of how many scores of virgins? i ain’t allah but i can bet that there’ll be no other way you’re gonna make it to syurga.
November 25, 2007 at 4:19 am
those from ipoh would know the famous asrama in st michael’s institution. in the good old days, this “residential” portion of the christian missionary school was run by christian brothers for muslim malays from local rural areas. i wonder how many of these asrama boys have gone on to renounce islam, become christian brothers or priests, and how many have become imams.
Klaw: Those Christian brothers are doing it for the good of the community. They have shown a very good example to all of us that we should not use religion solely as an excuse to do good.
November 25, 2007 at 4:51 am
Thanks for the translation, Kenny
These MPs obviously have their heads in the “parit”.
Practically all the news on mission schools since 2003 can be found at:
ASSUNTA ALUMNI | In the Media - Mission Schools
http://www.assuntaalumni.com/media/missionschools.html
All past students of mission schools and the public are also encouraged to sign the Online Petition: Respect the Ethos and Character of Mission Schools at http://www.petitiononline.com/assunta/petition.html - Just state the school you are from. This petition is still on since 8 April 2005 and we hope to have this redressed before school resumes in January 2008.
Please do not flame at the online petition as we’ll be submitting to the relevant authorities again. Positive and constructive remarks are most welcomed.
BTW, this blog should be forwarded to ALL newsgroups nationwide. Simply because…
WHEN THEY CAME
First they came for the socialists,

Then they came for the trade unionists,

Then they came for the Jews,

Then they came for me,

Most of the English Schools were run by missionoaries. Normally, a Christian would be the Head. In Sg. Siput the UMNO insisted that a Malay should be Head of the school. The first mission of the Head of the school was to break the cross, which was permanently built on the wall. What did the cross do to the Malay headmaster. The Malays are fanatics and they themselves are destroying the country. Everywhere corruption is rampant and because of their incompetency, the foreign investers are shunning off Malaysia. The Indians cleared the jungle and developed the estates. Built roads, railways, telecomunications etc….look at the plight of the indians..the so called MIC’s are filled with gansters and womanisers…
Klaw: Corruption being rampant is not a Malay thing. It is rather a Malaysian thing that has been left unchecked because of our government’s policies and short-sightedness.
November 25, 2007 at 11:47 am
Is MIC is really representing the Indian Communities? Look at MIC, filled with gansters, rowdies..The poor Indians collected millions and Sami’s son Velpari is managing it. The MAIKA Holdings is a platform for velpari to get the management trainig…All the asset vanished…he is screwing and enjoying life with other women…Look at the family…everybody scattered…everybody is screwing and enjoying life…no piece in the family…intellectulas are not allowed in MIC…all are ball carriers…they can’t even lead a proper family life…do you think, they can lead and manage indian communities….the poor labourers who raised the money and gave to to Samy…hoping the Indian equity could be raised…UMNO screwed them up

Hello,
I would just like to know what these 2 fucking UMNO MPs have to say about full scale conversion of mission schools into religious (Muslim) schools, since May 13 1969, esp. those in smaller towns, eg. Kulim in Kedah.
My former School St Patrick’s used to boast a tradition of good results in those days before 1969 when it produced top scholars in the Cambridge SC, who went on to HSC and then MU (the one and only prestigious one with Alex Oppenheim as VC, professors like Lim Fung Kee, Wang Gung wu, etc, not the half past 6 bumi vcs who are there at UMNO’s beckon and who even plagiarized the works of their students! It would interest these 2 UMNO pigs to know that my former school, St Patricks, is now a Sekolah Kebangsaan Melayu Islam with only its name as its remaining legacy. The transformation would have been more complete if they simply change the name to some Malay Islamic school long after the crosses, holy pictures, statues of saints have disappeared! The female counterpart of St Patrick’s, St Anne’s convent suffered a similar fate! The hooded females of St Anne’s in the 50s & 60s used to be the nuns, but now they are the ustazahs in their tudungs!!!
Old boys of St Patricks and old girls of St Annes don’t feel any sentiment for their old alma mater because its character has been altered!!! Even if we, who are successful today, want to contribute money to some scholarship for deserving students, we hesitate because of the govt’s NEP, in that only bumis would get the aid!!! As such we are now ashamed to be associated with our old alma mater’s when we should have been proud to do so…IF NOT FOR THE FUCKING UMNO GOVT’S RACIAL/RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATORY POLICIES!
Let those 2 UMNO pigs MPs read and ponder over my comments before they start accusing what’s left of adulterated mission schools in defending what little they have of, yes, insulting Islam with their christian symbols!!!
Klaw: johan baba, instead of worrying whether your money goes to the right person, you could perhaps team up with the old boys and girls and start a trust fund to help the most deserving students regardless of race. It’s a great statement against the NEP, and you won’t be depriving deserving students of the help you can give. Give it a thought, will ya?

I’m from St. Michael’s Ipoh, anyone touches anything on my school, I will kill them!
Hell, on one hand, we boast of multi-racial harmony and such, on the other we have < removed > trying to take out Christian crosses on schools?
I have more problem with the < removed > mosque being built right next to the Ipoh General Hospital. And more problems with Muslims having a great afternoon nap in their holy Masjid Jamek. I find your 5 times ‘Waktu Maghrib’ < removed > on TV even more offensive than some harmless crosses.
Hello MPs, the other races do not owe you Malays anything. You should be happy the Chinese and Indians came to prosper this country, my country!
Without us, Malaysia is just another Indonesia. In fact, you arent the real bumiputras, you took it from the Orang Asli. You guys came from Indonesia for starters. The Chinese and Indians came here with nothing! Only sweat and blood brought us to where we are!
Hello, did we made any noise when millions were thrown into building the big-ass mosque in Putrajaya? In fact, I admire and celebrate the magnificent structure and feel proud that Malaysia could achieve such a feat.
Hey, these old missionary school buildings are our heritage and soul. These Lasallian schools have produced countless leaders and successful people. People who in turn contribute to the betterment of the country.
Cant the 2 fucking morons differentiate between a national asset and liability? Do they have any sense of what it means by moving forward?
Hell i feel like bitch-slapping their ganja doped face!
Leave the schools alone!
Proud Michaelian
Klaw: Hi Proud Michaelian, I’ve had to edit out some words from your comment. You’ve got it right towards the end though. We should respect the building for its role in history, and not to white wash the history of this building and the country.

OMG…here we go again with 2 members of lame ‘MORONISTs’..trying to get attention from the sad looking country….dudes, what have gone into both of you? Need a lumbar puncture?into your brain perhaps? I sense there are tumours in both of your brains and hearts, which would eventually lead to the ruin of this ‘multireligious’ & ‘multicultural’ country…owh, how lame art thou!!so lame..lame..and lame.. for both of you..playing that stupid game…owh..how lame..

I hope all who have made their comments here, if you didn’t participate in the Bersih rally the other day, will participate in future rallies. Only a free and fair election can ensure that we don’t have anymore of these characters in our august House.

It sometimes saddens me that the split and huru-hara in the country is actually manifested by supposedly illustrious and enlightened leaders. I strongly believe that the average man on the street, irregardless of race or religion, holds no grudge or animosity towards each other.. that is until our YB (Yang Bodoh) speaks. One thing that those elected ones always seem to forget is that they are holding a public position and as such makes them public servants. Did we elect them to speak on our behalf to better the country or were they elected to break up the country? Are they voicing our opinions or theirs? Are they championing our interest or theirs? From what I have observed so far, it’s the latter. Like what was said many times by our Ministers - this is a fair and democratic country, vote us out if you do not like us. A brave and arrogant challenge but will it be gracefully accepted should they lose?
Klaw: randall, this happens because the BN is run along racial lines, whereby politicians swear allegiance to their own parties. Of course they will then champion their own causes, at the expense of other people. The people in this country have been deeply ingrained to think as Malay/Chinese/Indian first, instead of Malaysian first, which is why such divide-and-rule tactics work. I think it will be hard for these people to be voted out in their own constituencies, but you never know, right. Karma might bite back.
November 28, 2007 at 11:33 am
Klaw, as modertor/owner of this blog, you could do us your readers a ggreat service by printing out these comments and sending it to these two vomits. I intend to blog on this….presently.
Klaw: Hey zorro, I’ve already got you on my feed reader, so I’m looking forward to your post. Perhaps we can combine our comments?

Pahlawan Volunteers calls on UMNO to sack two ignorant MPs with immediate effect to restore public confidence in the Government the rakyat voted in.
The duo’s irresponsible and unsubstantiated comments clearly demonstrate their glaring narrow-mindedness and TOTAL IGNORANCE of the following; thus distracting and sabotaging the way forward and urgent progressive steps being taken by the Government to arrest the decline in global competitiveness and to rebuild the nation:
1. The Constitution of Malaysia - Read Part II, Articles 11 and 12 at http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Constitution_of_Malaysia
2. Absolute no idea how mission schools are run and conducted in the best interest of the nation-building.
3. Mission schools are not fully Government funded, but categorized as a “sekolah bantuan modal” or Government aided school. This means that for many needs including school building projects and maintenance, the school would have to find its own funds.
4. The Government’s supportive stand of mission schools as announced in the various media as seen at Assunta Alumni’s news archive on mission schools nationwide at http://www.assuntaalumni.com/media/missionschools.html
5. Among the distinguished old boys from mission school Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan St John Kuala Lumpur, or St John’s Institution are Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Education Minister Datuk Hishammuddin Hussein, the Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, just to name a few.
PETITION: Respect the Ethos and Character of Mission Schools
http://www.petitiononline.com/assunta/petition.html
Please note that the above Assunta online petition is still ON (initiated early April 2005). Subsequently, we wrote to the Minister of Education and relevant education departments on 15 June 2005. We hope to see this redressed before school resumes in January 2008 and as we are going to celebrate Assunta Golden Jubilee next year.
Please sign the petition online if you have not done so. All past students of mission schools and the public are also encouraged to sign the above Online Petition. State the year you left school and school attended; and perhaps how the ethos and character of your school was lost. A gentle reminder: Please do not flame at the online petition as we’ll be submitting to the relevant authorities again if need be. Flames will be deleted, positive and constructive comments are most welcomed.
My heart went out to those mission schools who lost their ethos as I read here and at other blogs and forums too. I hope Assunta Alumni will be a light for all to follow… no matter how long it takes, never ever give up.
I’ve also updated http://www.assuntaalumni.com/media/missionschools.html so all mission schools nationwide can have access to the published news archive at one source.”
Please forward this message on to all mission schools, and their old boys and old girls nationwide that you may know.
Love and God bless you abundantly always and all ways.

I was educated in St Francis’ Institution in Melaka. For us Franciscans, we don’t even call ourselves ex-Franciscans because once a Franciscan, we die a Franciscan!
I’m very sure that ‘Laurel & Hardy’ did not go to missionary schools. They would never understand the values and sentiments of missionary schools.
Yang Berhormat Wakil Parti, being religious and pious is not about material. Holding a Bible does not me a Christian. If you are strong in your faith, nothing can shake it. Well, we all have choices. If you can’t live with this, send your kids to another school. Many are dying to get into these schools.

The two Yang Bodoh are not qualified to represent their constituencies as they did not do their home work before they brought up this issue. This is a very sensitive issue and they should apologise to the public.
From my observation, the two stooges were very active in parliament but most of the issues brought up were rubbish. Let alone the way they delivered their comments. I really hope that these two stooges be replaced in the coming General Election.
As a Malaysian I feel embarassed to have the two stooges in the Parliament. Axe ‘em! they deserved to be left untouched inside a sardine can.

A Paulian true and true - this tearing down and rebuilding of national-type schools have been happening more than 20 years ago when SPI Primary and Secondary were rebranded - I miss those great teachers who loved us with their public caning etc - those were the good times -
Klaw: hahah, I would beg to differ with the public caning, however effective it was

The missionary schools in Malaysia had contributed tremendously to our country regardless of race or religion. The schools were established at a time where formal education was almost non existent. I believe many Malaysians can thank these schools for our achievement in work and life. The dedication shown by the Brothers and Sisters are second to none. Through their strict yet fair methods they have shaped countless Malaysian mind. In my 5 years in La Salle, Klang never once was I influenced to join Christianity. The Brothers practiced religious tolerance and freedom with true sincerity. Every Friday afternoon was reserved for the various religious society for prayers and learnings without prejudice. The Brother gave their best to ALL students with one sole intention and that is to EDUCATE.
Frankly, I’m a little disappointed with some of the response and language used by certain commentors. We shouldn’t taint the entire Malay population with the same brush, despite the very unprofessional conduct of our two MPs. I’m sure the Catholic Brothers and Sisters will be very disappointed with such attitude.
Klaw: ronin, thank you.

hey jackasses, what about u morons alwez boasting about how peaceful and multi-racial our country is?Bunch of hypocrites!Aren’t u suppose 2 be grateful dat God had sent His one and only Son Jesus Christ 2 die 4 us all so dat we could be forgiven by God?since you bastards despise Jesus by even having idiotic thought of demolishing Christan statues and crosses, you are despising God!!!
i ‘m not preaching at all,i’m just telling the Truth. And if u deny the truth, you’re on ur own…don’t blame me if u go to hell…
i really thank the Christians who stood up for God in this article, even if they didn’t write a comment.

toyotarave 2:54 pm: on public canning.
We gals at mission school Assunta PJ were went sent to the “Thinking Pool” to reflect on our misdeeds and to think of alternative positive ways or solutions to solve problems. Well, i know because i was one of them sent there.
It’s like solitary confinement in one corner of the school called the Woodlands; only it’s open air, blue skies and everything nice under the shady trees… and the only thing to complain about is we are food for mosquitoes. LOL!
More importantly, at sweet sixteen, i learned to spend quite time to think through problems before reacting to any situation till today. My sincere appreciation to Sister Enda for this.

Malaysia is NOT an islamic nation - d’oh! So what’s there to argue about. The pride of our nation is not the angkasawan blasting off into space to test out teh - tarik…sorry, cell………..something. The pride of our nation is that we are a melting pot of many cultures, races and religions that have learnt to live in harmony - especially that we achieved that without “prostituting” our individual identities. How we never seem to grow tired of “comparing notes” on how “it is done” in the other culture. You foolish men, don’t rob our children of this gem! It is OUR PRIDE, and OTHERS’ ENVY. Do we have to “lose it” before we find out how precious it is?

The two nerds (can’t say they are stupid because I think they went to school before. Can’t say they are clever because they are saying stupid things. So lets just call them nerds) are nothing but trouble makers.
They got nothing els to do but create trouble and trying to draw Christians into their webs of lies. It goes to show how “CLEVER” some nerds think they are. I think a child below ten is more has better brains then the above nerds.

I am a Paulian and way back in the 60s & 70s missionary schools were in great demand simply because you were guaranteed a good education by the devoted Brothers. The students of all races that I grew up with were all so successful in life and religion was never a negotiation tool of any sort or situation. I am sure that all Paulians of all races will not agree or have anything to do with these 2 longkang morons! Leave them in their filthy “parits” and do not waste time on them anymore - their next meeting should be in a zoo.

ronin 5:09 pm:
> on religious tolerance
Synonyms of the word “tolerance” are broadmindedness, open-mindedness, lenience, acceptance, forbearance, patience; unfortunately with the current low standard of English, the majority may understand it as “tolerate” which has a negative connotation to it, as in put up with, endure, bear… suggest we replace the word “tolerance” with “respect”.
> We shouldn’t taint the entire Malay population with the same brush, despite the very unprofessional conduct of our two MPs.
Very true. The same applies to the Government. Not all are ignorant and can’t see beyond their noses. E.g. As I see it, our Prime Minister and he is being sabotaged from within – by a corrupt adminstration. But that’s another story.
Back to education, I see Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein and his Education Ministry making positive changes in the education system. He is under a lot of pressure to revert the policy on using English for Mathematics and Science subjects. Thank God he is determined to stay on course. Read http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2007/11/25/focus/19547648&sec=focus and http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2007/11/28/nation/19592193&sec=nation. Another criteria for MPs - they should be selected from mission schools. As the rakyat, we should come out with a checklist the caliber of MPs we want. OK, I’m getting carried away. This should be on another thread.
> I’m sure the Catholic Brothers and Sisters will be very disappointed with such attitude.
Thank you for the gentle reminder, Ronin. Let’s keep our respective mission school flags flying high.
November 30, 2007 at 1:56 pm
Pat Lu
I like your idea of replacing the word ‘tolerance’ with respect. Come to think about it, respecting each other’s religion is much better than tolerating. Yeah, all Malaysians should learn to respect each other (not tolerate) than we truly can become Bangsa Malaysia.
The policy of teaching Mathematics and Science subjects in English is noble. However, as in many projects before, the implementation falls terribly short. When Dr. Mahathir announced it, all the shoe polishers jumped onto the bandwagon to sing praises. It was then implemented without much thought. The schools were not ready, the teachers were not ready and the rural students were definitely not ready. From day one, it was already heading for disaster ala Malaysian style. It should have been implemented gradually, first in urban schools, then get more teachers ready and finally only implement in the rural areas.
I have deviated from the topic. Sorry.
November 30, 2007 at 5:56 pm
Hi Ronin
It is indeed a sorry state of affairs. I’m one of that generation in the 70s affected by the change of education policy. In the transition before all subjects were taught in Malay, only History and Geography were in Malay. Though text books in Malay, my teachers still taught us in English and we had to answer exam papers in Malay. It was a torture for me.
History is repeating itself. As you mentioned, it’s in the implementation. I guess the present generation of parents, teachers and students will just have to change attitudes and mindsets; work harder to overcome it for long term benefits - for themselves as well as a collective whole, for the nation. Here’s an excerpt from the article Towards a Pragmatic Language Policy by Pahlawan Volunteers, Dec 3, 2003:
The national education system should review its medium of instruction policy. For effective acquisition and transmission of knowledge, we advocate review based on language best suited in each specific field. If English serves the teachers and students best in the fields of science, mathematics, engineering, medicine, information technology, economics and business, let’s make it the medium of instruction. For other fields, we should allow for choice in the medium of instruction, respecting the students’ other language skills. Full story, visit http://www.pahlawan.com.my/voice/language.shtml
Back to the topic of ignorant MPs and mission schools
The ethos of a school, not its course offerings, is the decisive factor in forming character. Read Character Matters and other articles under Additional Reading at http://www.assuntaalumni.com/media/missionschools.html
Also read A Gentle Reminder further down the same column. Just updated in case politicians visiting the site dunno the meaning of the words such as ethos, character and a long list of other words i’ve just inserted there :p

ROFLOL!
Errr, Ronin, I’m sure the Catholic Brothers and Sisters will understand. After all, Jesus also lost his temper and if i’m not mistaken, whipped the traders too in the synagogue. :p
Maybe we should send her to Parliament on our behalf to knock some sense into all MPs.

“whipped the traders”….
Hi Pat,
I don’t think Jesus did that. Perhaps there are some words which I have missed out. The closest that I know of is this verse -
Matt 21:12
12Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13″It is written,” he said to them, ” ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’[e] but you are making it a ‘den of robbers.’[f]“
December 1, 2007 at 12:28 pm
huh … those two morons, will be monkey of parliaments.
Ask them to come to sarawak, and for sure they die of heart attack when they saw that there are so many mission school in kuching for e.g. And church is just next to school.
Stupid MP’s.
December 2, 2007 at 6:41 pm
Thankyou, KakiAyam
Back to the ignorant MPs… maybe they should be publicly canned in Parliament (similar to good ole school days) for not doing their homework before opening their mouths.
December 2, 2007 at 7:14 pm
You’re welcome. I think this post of yours enlighten many of us on this issue. I wonder will there be follow up post, as I think many people will be concern about this.
I just hope this issue get blown up and perhaps we will take another walk on the streets for this issue.
As I came from a missionary school, I can assure you that the process of Islamisation or Nationalising these school are an on going effort. The modus operandi is similar. The transfer of good and experience teachers out, the transfer of headmaster/mistress and the transfer in of fresh grad from Maktab Perguruan in huge number. This process of killing these school will be complete in less than 5 years when the students of these school do badly in public examination. Imagine, we had a fresh grad as our Add Maths teacher. And that fresh grad are not even in Science stream and only receive a token two years of training in Teachers college prior to that.
It is when the school churn out bad performance, the donation from the public will stop and the school are forced to accept the full assistance from the Gov. The assistance will come with it’s own preset condition. The whole process completes its whole cycle when the headmaster/mistress is replace with a Malay.
It’s not that I hate the changes taking place, I just hate the way it is done, whereby a good functioning school that are usually well known with it’s level of english are destroyed.
December 2, 2007 at 9:03 pm
Hi Pat,
Greetings.
We meet again ….a long time after…SCUM (soc.culture.malaysia)
Awww! Not again.
Just what is happening to our dear country?
Why are we getting these kind of politicians who talks nothing but shit?
It is getting impossible!
Ex-Michaelian, Ipoh and Alor Star.
December 2, 2007 at 11:27 pm
They can say such things and get away with it while if anyone of us even question or whisper anything about the mosque, we are as good as dead, remember namewee? Such is the state of this country… and ppl are complaining that they miss a cultural show due to hindraf rally in thestar citizens’ blog.
anyway, it has reached a stage where most traditional schools can no longer be saved. look at BBGS, KL… demolished. my former school once boast to be one of the best in town, after they started putting morons there as teachers and trying to force the church to have them as principals… the school now cant even produce decent results.
history taught us that race and religion will send a country to doom… we might just be part of the same history for the future.
December 3, 2007 at 11:57 am
Let’s us the same words on them:
“Hey, this is Christian school. If you don’t like it, you can leave!” LOL!
December 3, 2007 at 12:32 pm
Hi Donald!
See, so many blessings in diguise… thanks to these YB MPs (however you interpret the acronyms)
1. We are back in touch (i reckon close to 20 years since SCUM?)

2. Got to know many more old boys and old girls from other mission schools besides the boys next door La Salle PJ and my siblings including their friends from St Johns
3. Got to know names and history of mission schools i never knew existed (and demolished) in Malaysia in this blog and other forums.
4. That warm and fuzzy feeling we’re there for each other as seen at http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?assunta&1 (2330 signatories at this minute)…
5. That leads to show we are all ONE in solidarity and care for the nation as in the song, No Matter What (Boyzone)
Add on, lets keep the spirits up. There is much to do to rebuild the nation. Think about it, how can each of us contribute in our own ways… perhaps go back to school and see how to help bring the ethos and character back as we are doing at Assunta PJ?
Always start with a prayer. With God, nothing is impossible. KakiAyam, please find that verse in the Bible… I know it’s there somewhere
Been there, done that. In His time, remember Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither was creation in 6 days (God rested on the 7th day).
Take a moment at a time and never ever give up… sometimes, taking a day at a time can also be overwhelming.
December 3, 2007 at 12:58 pm
Hi Zewt
Here’s my 2-sen what we can do all together…
Wear a yellow T-shirt every Saturday
Till our nation is back on its feet.
Time to Walk The Talk,
time to stop the blame,
time to stop the rot,
time to heal,
time to rebuild the nation.
For our future and our children’s future
for We are all ONE.
When One is harmed, all are harmed.
When One is helped, all are healed.
Time to show we care
Time to literally Walk the Talk
Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia!
Time to stand up and be counted.
“How?,” you may ask.
“I just small fry (ikan bilis) lah,”
in frustration you add.
Bravely you declare…
“Never mind the water cannons,
it’s monsoon season anyway!”
But on second thoughts, you cry…
“Tear gas I scared; I get beaten up how?”
“I still have parents depending on me!”
“Gotta think of my children!”;
“Gotta put food on the table!”
OK, OK, i hear you.
Here’s something you CAN DO…
Wear a yellow T-shirt every Saturday
Your entire family members too
Show your solidarity.
“Saya Anak Malaysia”; “Malaysia Truly Asia”
Demonstrated and expressed by you and me
The simple folks on the street.
In the park, shopping mall or wet market
When you see another in yellow
Don’t be shy; smile, nod your head,
Bersalam, our Malaysian custom
– by placing your palms to your chest
or just one palm, Salam means peace.
Wear a yellow T-shirt every Saturday
Till our nation is back on its feet.

03/12: Demand for removal of Christian cross and demolition of Christian statues
Category: Letters | Posted by: raja petra
Demand for removal of Christian cross and demolition of Christian statues in mission schools signs of growing intolerance and increasing extremism inimical to successful nation-building
There is growing intolerance and increasing extremism in Malaysia which are inimical to successful nation building and the latest instance is the demand for the removal of the Christian cross and the demolition of Christian statues in mission schools.
I raised this issue in Parliament this morning during the winding-up of the Education Ministry in the 2008 Budget committee stage debate by the Deputy Education Minister, Datuk Noh Omar and expressed my concern why the Education Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein had not said anything to dissociate the government from such extremist demands.
During the policy debate on the 2008 Budget on Oct. 29, 2007 the Barisan Nasional Member of Parliament for Parit Sulong, Syed Hood bin Syed Edros, supported by the BN MP for Sri Gading, Datuk Haji Mohamad bin Haji Aziz called for the removal of the Christian cross and the demolition of Christian statues in the mission schools.
The loyalty of mission schools was questioned, with the baseless allegation that they refuse to observe Aidilfitri public holiday and close the schools. There was even the preposterous accusation that the mission schools were administered by churches outside the country, including the Vatican.
I asked Noh Omar whether he is aware that the extremist demands by the two BN MPs have created a furore, particularly on the Internet, and why the Education Ministry was condoning such extremism by its silence when such statement should be denounced without equivocation.
I also reminded the Deputy Education Minister that it is wrong and mischievous to assume that Muslims studying in mission schools are potential apostates, when mission schools had made great contributions in nation-building and produced many Malay leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, the Education Minister himself, the Perak Raja Muda Raja Nazrain Shah and the Sultan of Selangor who had been products of mission schools.
There was no satisfactory reply from Noh Omar.

[...] The demands by the 2 MPs to demolish Christian statues and destroy crosses smack of religious intolerance, and also shows disrespect to the histories and contributions of these schools to our country. I Don’t Buy The Moron MP’s Angle…
About a week or so ago, there were some heated responses in the blogosphere when it was revealed that 2 UMNO Members of Parliament suggested that crosses and images be removed from mission schools. Among the allegations made by these……
December 4, 2007 at 5:49 am
Pat, there are many verses that say something to that effect. But anyway, these are some of the verses that I happen to find at the BibleGateway (http://www.biblegateway.com/)
Matt 19:26
26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Mark 10:27
Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”
And then, there is the Gospel of Luke which say something similar…
But personally reading these words in context, I feel this is in reference to personal salvation and the grace of God. There should be more suitable verse, I think.
December 4, 2007 at 9:09 am
Not only mission schools are being raped and destroyed in this Bolehland. Look at former “English” schools like Penang Free School, Stowell School (in Bukit Mertajam) etc. All the traditions of these schools (mission as well as “English” schools) have been totally wiped out.
I do not know how to contain my anger to read again and again how these b@!#$ds can go on making seditious remarks and NO action will/can be taken against them.
December 4, 2007 at 10:43 am
The Sun, Tuesday, December 4, 2007
I was merely voicing public concerns: Syed Hood
KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 4, 2007): Syed Hood Syed Edros (BN- Parit Sulong) has defended his Oct 29 debate in the Dewan Rakyat (Parliament) in which he questioned the display of images of Jesus, Mary and crosses in mission schools.
“I was merely voicing the concerns of the public at large. I only wanted the Education Ministry to provide a clear explanation on this,” he told reporters in Parliament lobby today.
Syed Hood stressed that he does not have any problems with mission schools and backed this up by saying that his eldest daughter used to study in the Batu Pahat Convent Primary School.
He said he was not worried about the possibility of facing sedition charges over his remarks.”Malaysia is a free country. If anyone is upset they can lodge a police report,” he said.
On Monday (Dec 3), deputy whip and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said he had not received any complaints from Barisan Nasional members about Syed Hood’s speech. He said the public can lodge a report with the police.

In this connection, I call on Hishammuddin to give a statement to explain how many missions schools in the country have the cross in the school emblem replaced, together with a full list of the schools concerned and the relevant particulars on year of removal and why.
Hishammuddin should also explain whether the Education Ministry would have any objection if the cross and Christian statues are restored for mission schools where they had been replaced or removed.

I also can say laaaa that it’s disrespectful to baca doa in front of Christian, Buddhist and Hindu students in school! Those morons can say anything they like, why can’t I? Why aren’t they taken in by UMNO for disciplinary action for seditious remarks against other race/religion? Double standard!
December 5, 2007 at 11:15 am
I really cannot understand, why these moron always brought up religion matter as we always live peacefully. I really think they should sack them. We have some many type of school here and they are free to choose Sekolah Kebangsaan so if they don’t like they always skip this private school. As our Samy like to say tak suka jangan guna. If you don’t like Christian school than don’t send your kids there, why there always have to bring up issuse.
I’m not a christian but really cannot tahan the way they speak. Is like taliban like to destroy statues only. Sometime I really feel our MP education level is like ????, don’t use brain to speak. If they are allow to speak like this I think everybody can become an MP.
Religion like Buddhist, Christian & Islam has been here for a long long time and everyone can live with it, why some moron like to bring up issuse and make a mass out of it. Now we can really see how our goverment act on this type of issuse and you know who to choose this election.

Peace to all of you there….
If this MPs have said that then their words are against the true teaching of Islam.
They are not qualified to be MP or Wakil Rakyat……they are pouring more oil to the fire which burning now. They should be taken action and do not allow any mp’s to discredit any religions.
Islam teaches us to respect other religion though there are rooms of disagreement in theology.
to my non muslims friend, please be professional handling such cases, dont use vulgar words…that also shows some hate deeply rooted..
in this country i chose to blame both muslim and non -muslim of their 3rd class mentality and paranoia.
to non- muslim in malaysia please see the masjid kapitan kling penang where interfaith discussions alway takes place.
For God sake why cant we be different and yet we can tolarate each other with love as we all are the children of Adam.
i STRONGLY CONDEMN ANY KIND OF RACISM AND FANATICISM.
I Believe God have given us all including the good and bad sufficient provisions but up there , there are selfish and evil monger peoples from all walk of race.

Peace be with the two untolerate MP’s..Hope God will open their heart and their mind to think carefully before making any statement on others religion.. Christian’s Always Love Both Of You..
December 6, 2007 at 6:27 pm
I went to primary school in Methodist Boys School in Sentul, KL. We started the day by singing Negaraku and no Christian song at all was sang any day or time. We also have Moral class for the non-Muslim and Agama class for the Muslim. We get a very long holiday during Hari Raya.
So, what if the building have statue or cross. The school been there since the English conlonial time. It’s a historical building that should be protected.
Those 2 MPs had nothing better to do is it? Creating story like this just like the entertainment news from Hong Kong always cooking up some false story.
December 7, 2007 at 12:48 am
i totally disagree on what the MPs has said. Although Islam is the official religion of Malaysia, there are many races in this country and it is a democratic country. The architecture of these mission schools should not be tampered at all. It has been there since the British/Dutch/Portuguese/Japanese times long before Malaya reached independence! These are historical buildings! What these 2 idiots said shows their hypocrisy, narrow minds and disrespect to other religions. I think if the government do what they say, this would create a permanent scar in the hearts of fellow Christians and our country will end up Muslims and Christians hating each other or even kill each other. Religion is an individual’s choice. Religion should be respected no matter what. Christian Malaysians do not have the intention to make non-Christians embrace Christianity, am I right? If religious symbols of the schools bother you Muslim Malaysians, don’t go to that school la. There’s no rule of who should/shouldn’t attend the school. Mission schools are not that many compared to ’sekolah agama’. It’s time to be more open-minded and think ways to make Malaysians prosper, MPs. Start from religion and customs (build churches, shrines, mosques, etc. for us and encourage us to hold on to our beliefs), we will trust you and we will be happy to serve our country (touch not our religion!!). It’s our foundation of life.
December 7, 2007 at 4:08 am
note to MPs: before making a statement, please investigate thoroughly and ignore what others said that offend other religions and think/speak WISELY!
It’s the RAKYAT that say the darndest thing after all. MPs brought this matter to the parliament on behalf of these particular ‘rakyat’ and become victims to be criticized by most Malaysians. Poor politicians.
December 7, 2007 at 4:21 am
i quote from one of our forumers opinions :”Religion is a set of beliefs. You choose what to belief. Just because you think your religion is better than other people does not give you the right to condemn and push your religion onto other people. Stupid fucking politicians.”
…………Hem…….
demolish christians statues n destroy crosses won’t contribute any peace lah……it’s merely a very emotional reactions without thnking……….
………better go ‘belajar’ somewhere bout other religion…and respects it .
December 7, 2007 at 1:35 pm
Malaysia is a multiracial country…why do we have to criticize on sensitive subject that only lead to violence? Please respect ourselves and others.. No war on this, PLEASE!
Klaw: Don’t think there will be war on this. But we should criticize when criticism is due. To be silent signifies acceptance or resignation.

Pak Lah and the BN may think that it is ridiculous for Hindraf to accuse the government of ethnic cleansing.
Well apart from Kerismuddin brandishing his keris and threatening to spill blood, I must say that they don’t go around annihilating other races but they DO practice subtle cleansing of other religions.
It took 20 over years for the Catholic Church to get approval for a church in Shah Alam. I’m not sure if anybody realises that new churches don’t really look like churches anymore. They’re either housed in shop lots or they look like mere warehouses. Only the older churches have building that are shaped like the cross.
Klaw: Henry, I noticed as well. I don’t know the last time I saw a church that was built that looked like a church (at least the ones we have in Ipoh). Of cuz, I haven’t been actively looking around for churches so I wouldn’t know for sure.

Bishop Paul Tan’s Call to Support Mission Schools,
In support of Bishop Paul Tan’s call, “…the government and people must continue to support and encourage missionary schools to ensure that these schools contribute towards nation-building by providing quality and caring education.” Full story, http://www.assuntaalumni.com/media/071208.html
Here’s the affirmative action we can all take…,
All who wish to redress the changes made at your mission school:
1. Make a list of the changes you’d like to see redressed at your mission school. Back your appeal with Points 1 & 4 from http://www.assuntaalumni.com/media/071128.html
2. Meet the current headmaster/headmistress to brief her as he/she may not be aware on the changes made years ago.
3. Follow up with a letter (include Appendixes from Point 1 above) and CC the school Board of Governors and PIBG too.
4. Meet with your school Board of Governors and PIBG.
5. Follow up and follow through till you get the go-ahead.
6. Then, raise funds to implement them as mission schools are not fully Government funded, but categorized as a “sekolah bantuan modal” or Government aided school. This means that for many needs including school building projects and maintenance, the school would have to find its own funds as stated in Point 3 at http://www.assuntaalumni.com/media/071128.html
7. FOLLOW UP and follow through till mission accomplished.
IT’S REALLY UP TO YOU NOW to take the initiative to redress the ethos and character at your mission school for the sake of future generations. We reap what we sow. And if we don’t take time to sow, there’s nothing to reap. All the news and facts you need are at Malaysian Mission Schools News Archive at http://www.assuntaalumni.com/media/missionschools.html - one source for everyone’s convenience nationwide.
Come April 2008, it’ll be FOUR years we Assunta PJ old gals will be championing for our mission school ethos and character to be redressed. In the process, we had no choice but to garner support through an online petition as seen at http://www.petitiononline.com/assunta/petition.html. Please sign the petition if you have not done so; simply because “We are all ONE. When one is harmed, all are harmed; when one is healed, all are healed.”
See blessings in disguise in every situation and in everything, give thanks to God; including the two MPs for being the catalyst for us to champion this.
Ex-LaSallean (Peel) Gerry Alphonso has dedicated a musical prayer to all Malaysians who have helped and who help in nation-building in countless ways. Do listen to the musical prayer, May God Bless You at http://www.assuntaalumni.com/ChristmasJoy/index.html.
Please buy the Christmas Joy! CD Album as gifts for all your loved ones this Christmas season. “Message of Peace” wrote NST and listen to the lovely song A Change of Heart; music and lyrics by Gerry Alphonso too at http://www.assuntaalumni.com/ChristmasJoy/NST031222.html.
Please forward this email and let’s Walk the Talk to rebuild this nation together.
Most importantly, never ever give up. We can make a difference.
May God Bless You too – all ways and always.

December 12, 2007 at 5:02 pm
I hardly read blogs, or even the news papers but this issue caught my attention. I studied in Methodist Girls School for 11 years and the statements given by those 2 MP’s are preposterous. My school was built during the Japanese Occupation as a fort for the British soldiers. Hence, the school had a big cross at the front entrance and a small one at the top. No one had any issues with it and parents were dying to get their children in these schools. I don’t remember ever recalling that during Raya the schools were open. We enjoyed every gazette public holiday and the best part about missionary schools that “Good Friday” the schools are closed as well. Teachers get another extra day off, what’s there to complain??
These are historical buildings, our legacy. Demolished it? Why? Just because they wanted to have 2 mins of fame to give their 2 cents worth load of bullshit? Where the hell did these ignorant twins get their facts from - school for the dumb and dummer? Don’t have the facts right, then go and poke their noses where it does not belong - what does that tell ya? Bodoh la ape lagi.
This is purely provocation. These are the kind of statements that can fuel unnecessary aggravation. Hence, comes the petition - rally - protesters. If they are so bold to give such statements and they should be prepared for the consequences. Don’t blame the bloggers or the public when they voice out their comments. They just have to spark once or tap on the sensitivity about religion and we will have a lot of angry people saying a lot of nasty things.
These Ministers, our so called “leaders” of our country, who gave them the authority to judge other religions? To demolished the symbols of Christianity, Hinduism or Buddhism? No one has the right to say that their religion is better than the other. All religion teaches us to be good. One needs to have faith, a certain guidance and civilization. That’s the beauty of our country - multiracial, multi-festivals.
The choices of words used by these ministers are really disturbing. They have “delivered” our country/nation to be under a scope. They have allowed the world to speculate on how our country is being driven. There are topics like poverty, global warming, drug abusing etc - issues that can deteriorate the human race itself! Come on la, by condemning or discriminating ones religion or race will not get anyone anywhere but raise hatred, disparity and disunited.
Choose our ministers wisely and the ones that are not deserving. please get a reality check whether you have the characteristic or a brain would be ideal to lead a multi-racial nation.
Klaw: Extremely well said. The unfortunate thing is, the ones who are not deserving continue to be selected for general elections, and this just helps reaffirm in their minds that they will still be rewarded by bad behavior.
