Police Violence: If The French Can Do It, Why Can’t We?
November 29, 2007
The official mouthpiece of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has spoken again. This time, he drops another gem.
Quoted in thestar.com.my
Nazri also reiterated Abdullah’s warning that the Internal Security Act would be used if the situation warranted it.
“Don’t challenge the Government. They can try and hold a rally again and see what will happen,” he added.
“The authorities were accused of excessive action. Look at France, whose police used tear gas and even rubber bullets when a demonstration occurred there.”
Hahaha, ok, so we’re now comparing ourselves to France? In France, the tear gas and rubber bullets were only used because it was already a full-blown riot. Not JUST a demonstration, as Nazri would like to put it.
The riots in France started when a police car killed two teenagers in a collision. Their deaths sparked angry youths to come out and torch cars, a library, pre-school and other public property. That, Mr. Nazri, is a riot.
I know the country tried to paint Sunday’s HINDRAF demonstration as a riot, but look at all the pictures available on the Internet. You will see that the police started to fire tear gas into a peacefully gathered crowd. The only justification of this coming out from the top policeman’s mouth is that they ignored the call to disperse. Note that the cop didn’t say the crowd was acting violent, or the crowd were threatening the police. The tear gas and water cannons were used because the crowd refused to disperse.
So are all demonstrations considered riots? Maybe only in Malaysia, and in the eyes of our government.
Demonstration - A demonstration is an historically and geographically common form of nonviolent action by groups of people. The term “demonstration” was coined in the United States during the civil rights movement of the 1950s-1970s and refers to the public display of the common opinion of a group of people.
Riot - Riots occur when crowds or even small groups of people gather to commit acts of violence and property damage, usually in reaction to a perceived grievance or out of dissent.

Nazri: “Don’t challenge the government”
To the ‘penyangak’ sitting as a Minister in the PM’s department: Learn the bloody difference, jackass.

indeed, the government will continue misquoting and lying just so that they can make their own facts. the decision has been made; disperse a peaceful demonstration with an exercise of violence, then cover it up with the mainstream media. they will not admit that it was their mistake, nor will they admit that the demonstration was peaceful. heck, they wont even admit there is corruption everywhere.
they are just too prideful.
