US to Malaysian Government: Allow Peaceful Assembly
November 29, 2007
The United States has become the latest country to comment on the violent crackdown on demonstrations by the Malaysian government and police.
WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States underscored Wednesday the rights of Malaysians to hold peaceful protests, after Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi’s government swiftly suppressed mass rallies and threatened to use a draconian law to detain protestors indefinitely without trial.
“We believe citizens of any country should be allowed to peacefully assemble and express their views,” a US State Department official said when commenting on the crackdown of unprecedented street protests in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur this month.
One called for electoral reform which drew some 30,000 people, and another by at least 8,000 ethnic Indians last Sunday was aimed at highlighting racial discrimination.
The rallies were the biggest in a decade and took place despite bans ordered by police, who broke up the gatherings with tear gas, water cannons and baton charges.
The US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, did not go beyond his succinct statement, which was the first reaction by Washington on the rare outpouring of anti-government dissent in Malaysia.

How dare these Americans get involved with our affairs! Our good friend Nazri Aziz already scolded the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in meddling in our country’s business, now these stupid Americans wants to be scolded by Nazri as well? Do they know how it feels to be publicly rebuked by Nazri? Grown men have been known to pee in their pants, ok?
At this moment, even the Foreign Minister dare not say anything yet, but our national hero Nazri already helped Syed Hamid Albar to do his job. It seems like even Nazri is doing more than our PM, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in ensuring no one criticizes our country’s policies.
Perhaps I think we should extend the use of our Detain Indefinitely Without Trial (DIWT) program aka ISA to include all these foreign devils as well, because they are clearly a threat to our national security.
Go Nazri go!

As part of globalisation, foreign intervention needed. Otherwise ask your country to stand alone by itself. Can survive or not? Your own contry people is suffering from Nazri…did u know that.
Klaw: Malaysians do not suffer from Nazri. We only suffer from the occassional dengue scare and monsoon floods. Nazri has enlightened Malaysians with his infinite wisdom more times than I care to remember, and the people are forever grateful.

US only comments on the situation. It is up to our leaders to think about it for the sake of us Malaysians.

I am a malaysian living permanently in NZ and is still proudly introducing myself as a Malaysian. I am not a fan of the US as i think they are the biggest terrorist in the world with Bush’s administration, and i fully understand your pride as a malaysian as i have the same pride too but I must agree with giuse that the US is just commenting on the situation, it is up to our leaders to think about it for us malaysians.
I read from news and blogs that many malaysians think that all these street demonstrations is giving malaysia a bad look/image to the outside world but from the ‘outside world’, with humble, I am informing you that the people from the ‘outside world’ think that it is a very bad look that we don’t have the freedom to voice our unhappiness or views openly, we are run by a police state.
If there is a genuine democracy in Malaysia, there should be no state controlled media. I am not saying all but many malaysians are brain washed to accept how we are to be governed including myself. Not anymore now. the longer I live here the clearly I can see how I was brain washed.

anais,
Good to know that you are now seeing things as it is without the brainwashing. I cannot deny that the government owned media is a very powerful tool, that is why I am glad so many blogs and websites exist to tell the things as they see it. If you still have relatives in Malaysia, I hope you can work them through the lies and the spin in the media.
