Top 5 Darndest Things Said In December 2007

Oops, I was supposed to compile this list 2 weeks ago, but it’s never too late to look back on the previous month right? Anyway, here you are, the Top 5 Darndest Moments in December 2007! (November’s Top 5 moments are here if you’re interested :D).

#5. ‘Destroy Statues and Crosses’ MP: My Intentions Misunderstood
There was a public outcry regarding the statements released by Syed Hood Syed Edros, the MP of Parit Sulong to demolish Christian statues and crosses in schools. This issue was even raised in Parliament. Read to see how Syed Hood performs ‘tai chi’ to deflect the whole issue.

Aftermath: Well, no official apology from him. No action taken as well. Dah biasa la.

#4. Top 5 Stupid Statements From A Policeman’s Mouth
Haha, a Top 5 list in a Top 5 list. Musa Hassan tries to link Hindraf to the LTTE terrorist group in Sri Lanka. Of course, this being a political matter, no concrete evidence was produced.

Aftermath: It is with these suspicions that 5 members of Hindraf including their leaders have been imprisoned (let’s face it, it’s prison) under the Internal Security Act for 2 years without any hope for a trial.

#3. The Strength Of Ong Ka Chuan’s Political Clout
Ong Ka Chuan, brother of Ong Ka Ting makes fun of Anwar Ibrahim’s political strength, easily forgetting that he lost in the last elections after boasting that he would win by a big margin.

Aftermath: Chua Soi Lek resigned as Health Minister. Ong Ka Ting was made acting Health Minister. Some analysts are saying that Ong Ka Ting is now warming the seat up so that when his brother contests in a rural area and wins, he will then appoint his brother Ong Ka Chuan as the Health Minister. Chua Soi Lek certainly seems like a better choice…not!

Speaking of Chua Soi Lek…

#2. Chua Soi Lek: If You’re Not Satisfied With Our Hospital, Don’t Come
To those of you that say, Chua Soi Lek shouldn’t have resigned, blah blah blah, let’s see if you change your mind after reading how he responded to the case where a baby lost her arm to amputation due to negligence. A must read!

#1. The Ban on the use of ‘Allah’ by non-Muslims
Lucia Lai first alerted me that the Herald’s permit was not going to be renewed because the word Allah was used. I responded by posting Allah, God, Yahweh? What’s In A Name?, arguing that BN has problems with religious tolerance. Then came the first official reply by the government, Johari: “Allah” For Muslims Only, and as usual, some lame excuse is given for the decision. At New Year’s Eve, the permit for the Herald was given, and I posted on the different comments and views I have read in cyberspace. You’ve got to read Malaysians Suffering From Foot In Mouth Syndrome just to believe some of the things people write, especially letters to Malaysiakini.

Aftermath: The Herald got its permit, but the issue has yet to be settled. The Internal Security Ministry has stated that Allah still cannot be used, and this is based on a cabinet decision a few years back. Letters are still streaming into Malaysiakini regarding this issue, and once again, Malaysians are polarized over religion. Some other religious intolerance news can be found here and here.

December 2007 also saw the emergence/introduction of Sleepy the Dwarf, this blog’s new fairytale/political character obviously plagiarized from Disney, with an evil twist. Click here to read Sleepy’s adventures in Wonderland.

MCA seems to belong to the Ong family. This is what OKT called healthy political culture. Ong Ka Chuan lost in Batu Gajah last GE. Now he wants to go to a safe seat such as Gopeng or Tanjong Malim. This is also healthy political culture according the Ong brothers. Ha…ha….

Klaw: No la, Ong Ka Chuan will be trying a safer seat by going to Lenggong, but we’ll see.

actually what chua soi lek said is typical of what many other politicians had said. someone did say something on ‘if you don’t like the country, then leave’. then we also had the internal security minister saying something about visitors from china - if don’t like malaysia, don’t come or something to that effect. so personally for me, i wouldn’t pick what CSL said there re: the hospital as top 5.

methink many of what nazri and zam said can indeed be included in the top 10!

Klaw: Top 5 in December 2007 mah, not top 10 all time.

ya ii know, kenny but in 2007 nazri and zam also said a lot of silly things.

anyway you notice i mentioned ‘top 10′. i was talking about my own top 10 list. you gave a top 5 and it is your personal opinion, meaning i was not disputing with you that what CSL said shouldn’t be in your top 5. anyway i’m sure there are others who agree with you.

btw just into the first month of 2008, we might have one of the top 10 darndest thing said - by lingam “it sounds like me, it looks like me.”!!

Klaw: Hahaha, yes, that’s a good one by VK Lingam, even now, the newspapers are reporting it as “person in the video” instead of VK Lingam in case they get into trouble.
