How Najib and MCA Protects Us From Another May 13

Let’s start by asking a few simple questions. These will serve as analogies to show you whether Najib Tun Razak makes any sense.

You write a complaint against some government department, and they ignore you, then you show up at the office to make a complaint. The government officer then threatens you with a parang. Who should the police arrest?

You buy 10 apples, and it turns out all of them have worms. You bring it back to the storekeeper to exchange it, and then the storekeeper starts to chase you away with a stick and threatens to kill you. Who should the police arrest?

In both cases above, any person with common sense would agree that the police should arrest the person who is inciting violence, which are the people holding the parang and the stick.

Let’s visit this no-common-sense place called Malaysia and see how the country’s Deputy Prime Minister deals with situations like the above. He tried to defend the use of ISA on the 5 Hindraf leaders by claiming that the government has successfully averted another May 13, 1969. This is what he said, as quoted in a Malaysiakini article:
Najib: Crackdown on dissent averted racial clash

Najib 3D

Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak today defended the government’s crackdown on dissent, including the arrest of ethnic Indian activists and suppression of street protests, saying it had averted a serious risk of racial violence.

He raised the spectre of the country’s worst race riots, when almost 200 people were killed in clashes between ethnic Chinese and Malays in May 1969.

If the Malays of Kampung Baru come out then we have the spectre of a serious possibility of a racial clash in this country,” Najib said in an interview with AFP. The Malay enclave was one of the flashpoints of the 1969 riots.

There were signs that they were preparing to come out so we had to tell them, ‘look, don’t make the situation any worse’,” he said.

“The government was actually taking action to prevent anything worse from happening.”

Unprecedented street protests by Indian Malaysians, which police broke up with tear gas and water cannon, opened a new faultline in Malaysia’s increasingly tense race relations last November.

Five leaders of Indian rights group Hindraf, who claim the community is the victim of discrimination at the hands of the majority Malays, are now being held without trial under tough internal security laws.

So, what this means in Malaysia is that instead of arresting or stopping the real inciters of hate and violence that Najib claimed lived in Kampung Baru, the government went ahead and arrested those the ones who were threatened on trumped up charges of being linked to a terrorist organization.

WTF??? It sure as hell does not to me. All in all, it just affirms my belief that non-Malays are continuously being kept in a state of fear of violence, because UMNO wants non-Malays to think that the Malay residents in Kampung Baru are all violent. Is that true? I always had the impression that the violence was only encouraged by UMNO people, so that they can come off as some sort of ‘pembela maruah bangsa’ or something.

As despicable as using the specter of May 13th to instill fear into people’s heart (especially those of the older generation that lived through that period), you would only think that UMNO would be the ones who would continuously harp on it. Well, sad to say, those fellas at MCA frequently use it to scare the Chinese into voting for their party. The latest guilty MCA member? No other than Chew Mei Fun, the MP for PJ Utara.

Chew Mei Fun

Miss Chew was quoted in the China Press on January 21st saying the following: “If there is insufficient Chinese representation in the Barisan Nasional, it is not a good thing, the Chinese community cannot afford another May 13 incident.”

The honest to god truth? I AM EFFING SPEECHLESS. How would insufficient Chinese representation in BN lead to another May 13? Is it because Miss Chew knows that BN members will start slaughtering the Chinese community? If she knows something, she had better tell us so that I can make preparations to take an extended holiday break in Haadyai, or somewhere where I will be safe.

Seriously, Miss Chew, that is what I call a cheap shot. Trying to fish for votes like that. But I have to remember that this is an MCA politician. I expect no less from her.
In a quick about turn, yesterday, China Press printed an apology for ‘misquoting’ Miss Chew. Just read this blog for the apology: China Press: It’s our fault, not Chew’s. It is worthwhile to note that the clarification by China Press if you read Chinese. Could it be a misquote? What led to the China Press reporter mis-reporting it? Did Miss Chew give the impression that she meant May 13th incident? What else could she have meant?

Whatever it is, civil society groups have already released a statement condemning Miss Chew. One wonders if civil society kept quiet, would China Press have issued an apology? The statement: Say No to the Spectre of May 13

Najib and Chew Mei Fun says the darndest things!

Still think UMNO and MCA are the best bets to run this country? Think again.

keep the voters in fear to perpetuate their power. in the process, plunder the country resources to enrich themselves and thier cronies. what a team, UMNO and MCA in collusion to create the Malaysia’s largest bail-out entailing a whopping RM4.7 billion in Port Klang Fleece Trade Zone. Who were the beneficiaries? Me, you, opposition members? Must be kidding. Check out yourself.

Perhaps the govt should arrest all women in the country for potentially inciting the “nafsu” of rapists.

Then BN can boast “Satu lagi kejayaan kerajaan Barisan Nasional” - preventing rape by arresting women rather than rapists.

Or arresting home owners to avoid burglary. “There were signs that burglars are preparing to come out and steal” says Najib.

But Kenny you’re right. In both cases above we won’t know for sure who’s gonna rape or break into houses. Najib is so sure that the Malays in Kampung Baru would come out and run amok. Would the IGP link these ppl to terrorists such as Jemaah Islamiah? Not in a million years…

I wonder where’s our friend Robyn? Come out and defend Miss Chew yea.

I suppose she’s gonna say something like, “She’s only trying to help Chinese from getting slaughtered…what’s wrong in helping people? How could you think she says the darndest things? You don’t even know what she’s thinking?”

Oh, one word from Najiz and the Kampong Baru people stopped using violence? I wonder how true is that. If the people are rational, they won’t use violence. If they are violent, they won’t care WTF you are. Or maybe the people are under command of Najiz, “attack under my call”.

Miss Chew’s quote is classic man. Maybe ODAMA can learn from her. “If there isn’t sufficient blacko representation in the Rumah Putih, we might face similar May 13 tragedy of Malaya”

    Henry,
That shows the quality of leadership in our country. That’s why I still wonder why people continue to pick these leaders in the election.
(and don’t bully Robyn ler :P)

    Psychoric,
That’s true. There was a secret letter supposedly penned by the UMNO General-Secretary, that called for a “racial action plan” in response to the Hindraf event. Of cuz, once revealed, everyone in UMNO said it was false, but till this day, none of them has dared made a police report, when usually they would have. Another skeleton in their closet.

    falcon,
Thanks, keep reading other posts and let me know what you think.

    azrin,
The economy is another thing. Things like oil and essential goods prices are sometimes out of the government’s control. Of course, it’s the policies that the government has that cause things like oil money from Petronas to be spent frivolously, cooking oil shortages etc.

I think many of of top leaders in Malaysia say quite a lot of very ‘clever’ things (they are pretty proud to show that off too!!) this is another typical incident - our DPM showing off how ‘clever’ he is. he makes a pretty damn good joker i must say!!
    Again, who is racist here?
how dare these people say the minorities are not marginalised??
as for Chew, sigh….might have got good intentions but very wrong method.
Can we please have politicians/leaders that have a little bit more brains than us?
BTW great work Kenny, keep it up!!: )
