Ipoh Timur Postal Votes: No Hanky Panky There
January 24, 2008
What if I told you the Election Commission continues to think that we, the rakyat are morons? On October 26th 2007, I wrote an article titled Hanky Panky In Ipoh Timur regarding the wholesale increase of up to 8000 voters in the Ipoh Timur constituency. I quoted statistics in Malaysiakini that there were 3208 new postal votes in Ipoh Timur since the last general elections.
My question then was, where did these 3208 new postal voters come from, if there weren’t any new army bases or police stations in the Ipoh Timur. Heck, were there even any new army bases or police stations in the entire city of Ipoh? Even if there were, 3208 new postal voters? Where have the extra policemen or army personnel been hiding?
Haris Ibrahim of The People’s Parliament has helped the voters from Ipoh Timur to seek for answers regarding this matter, and he has even met up with the Perak SPR to clear up this matter. Since then, he has been waiting for a written reply to this issue, and finally, Perak SPR has sent him a letter explaining the entire situation (trying to explain the issue away seems more apt).
The letter is reproduced here, and is taken from Haris’ blog post titled SPR, Perak reply finally arrives.
Perbezaan Bilangan Pemilih Pos
Pemilih Pos Pilihan Raya 2004 : 1,101
Pemilih Pos sehingga Suku Ke 2/2007 : 2,125
Perbezaan : 1,024
Perbezaan Bilangan Pemilih Berdaftar
Jumlah Pemilih Pilihan Raya 2004 : 73,329
Jumlah Pemuih sehingga Suku Ke 2/2007 : 74,918
Perbezaan : 1,589
Jumlah Pemilih Pos Keseluruhan di Parlimen Ipoh Timor sehingga Suku Ke-2/2007 adalah 2,125.
First things first. SPR (or the Elections Commission) has only given the statistics from the second quarter electoral roll for 2007. That means it was valid up to July 2007. Why was this statistic given, when the date of the news report was in October? If anything, SPR should have provided the statistics up till the fourth quarter of the electoral roll, since it has just been confirmed and entered into the main electoral roll. Is there something that SPR wants to hide there?
Secondly, even with this provided statistic, I still find it HIGHLY questionable as to why there were 1024 new postal votes as compared to 1589 new normal votes. What do you think? If you’re registered to vote in Ipoh Timur, what are your concerns? Do you think this is free and fair elections?

This is sad indeed…and sometimes I think what good is it to vote. The BN has put in place rodents and bugs to ensure that they continue to rule forever. Even this elections with all the problems in the country and all the dissatisfaction the bN is going to win again. …and again…and again…. a very sad state of affairs.
Klaw: Yes, meng, I agree that sometimes feeling like voting is futile. But in the end, voting is better than not voting, so that we continue to speak out (via the ballot boxes) that we do not want to legitimize what BN is doing by giving them an easy victory.

Statistics without explanation and statements made and expected to be authoritative seem to be the style of our present leadership.
Promises like anti-corruption measures and setting up a IPCMC require more time? What about unilateral extension of EC Chairman’s retiring age - what was the hurry?
I have a natural tendency to side the victim and so far, our elections have never been fair. The whole weight of government machinery will be upon us soon. So voters should vote opposition just to correct the imbalance first before any real contest starts. That’s my way of dealing with an unfair BN.

eventhough until 2nd quarter 2007, the number of new voters is also quite high.
