Malaysia Wakes Up To A New Dawn
March 9, 2008
Yes. I bet most of you were up all night, and furiously refreshing Malaysiakini’s site all night until it went down
And by now, you would already know that the opposition has denied BN it’s 2/3rd’s majority in Parliament. This means that the new Abdullah Ahmad Badawi administration will no longer be able to rule Parliament with impunity.
Since Malaysiakini is down, you can see the full election results here (courtesy of TheStar.com.my, the people’s paper)
Election Results Map (some fancy stuff)
There were a few darndest things said last night, but I will let it pass because it was probably borne out of frustration on the BN leader’s part.
I’ll be back with my views on the election results later, until then, happy surfing! Let me know if you find a better site that shows results.

I’m sure Barisan Alternatif will have lots to learn. Hence it’s our duty to continue giving feedback to BA. And it’s their duty not only to listen but also take appropriate actions to our satisfaction.
So BA, learn from BN’s mistakes & pls don’t lose touch with our wants and needs. Thank you!

May i ask?I am just curious. So currently Penang is under DAP. How will DAP handle penang? I mean how will they bring in development or continue the current incomplete projects if funds given from the federal will be lower ( since BN is controlling-government ). Will penanghites gotta suffer for the next four years until the next general election whereby DAP will have the chance to take over the parliament? Coz i am just worried,( no development means no quality jobs which also means lower quality of life). Just curious…. yeah i do agree BN have pull down from the sky. But how will DAP improve the quality of life in penanghites with the government is controlled by BN?

jiewy,
I’m not terribly good with economics of state and federal resources. Here is what I think though:
Without federal aid, those really huge projects will not be completed, but the federal government has to ask itself whether it dares to risk alienating the voters in the north by making them fend for themselves. They might lose even more votes.
Penang, is a considerably rich state that generates its own income as well, from taxes I believe, so a more efficient and clean government will be able to generate surplus for the state. This can be used for development.
But your worries are shared by many, including me. But I think the federal government will worry as well on this issue, because once you alienate voters, its hard to win them back.

One of the ways Penangites can lead a better life is when there are open tenders for contracts from the government. This will ensure that the state saves money, and this money can be channeled to social projects that benefit the people. If you’re a Penangite, you should make damn sure that the new state government listens to you, because they only have 5 years to convince you that they are worth keeping for another round.
