A Pack Of Wild Beasts Surrounding Their Prey

Detainees found dead in police lockups of dubious causes. Excessive use of force on peaceful demonstrators. Individuals dragged from their cars and punched for trying to enter Parliament. Former chief personally presenting Anwar Ibrahim with a welcome gift to their lockup in the form of a black eye. Mongolian allegedly blown up with C4 by police special forces (I better be careful what I claim in case Najib decides to make an example of me).

This is the Royal Malaysian Police, and if the police decide to brutalize you, you could choose to make a police report but if you’re a nobody with no connections whatsoever, don’t expect any action to be taken. This means that the normal people like you and I have no recourse if any police violence happens to you. If you happen to die, I’m sorry, but that’s just fate.

The latest incident of police brutality happened after another standoff between Bandar Mahkota Cheras residents and the Federal Reserve Unit.

Supposed curiosity-seeker Chung Jiun Huar was alleged to have run over a police personnel with his car, and he was stopped and surrounded and then beaten till “soaked in his own blood”. Curiosity killed the cat, eh?

Malaysiakini reports the following, which you will probably never be able to read in the government-owned media:

A high-ranking police officer at the scene claimed that Chang had run over a FRU personnel with his car.

“He asked for it. He ran over a policeman and he got what he deserved,” the officer told Malaysiakini a few minutes after the incident.

Asked to identify the person who was hit by the car, the officer had initial difficulty in persuading the individual to come forward.

When he did so, the man - who appeared unscathed - claimed: “He tried to run me over… look at my baton, it is broken. What more evidence do you want?”

The country needs police personnel to keep us safe. I recognize and respect the job that the police have to do, but there has to be limits on how they do their job, especially in terms of engagement of suspects (don’t forget innocent people have died before). Even if Chung had been guilty, you would expect an indisciplined angry mob to beat him up instead of the following bunch of wild animals baying for fresh kill:

Will these thugs be brought to book? Will any action be taken against them? I doubt it, and I am willing to bet my ass that it won’t happen. This is why this country needs an independent police commission to punish such thugs in the police force. We, the rakyat, no longer trust and expect the police to police themselves. I fully place the blame on the BN government’s lack of action and conviction to pass legislation regarding a fully independent police commission in Parliament.

Say NO to police brutality.

Can’t blame the police. They are just too free. They can’t fight with real robbers cos they are afraid to die in duty. They can’t manage traffic properly so they don’t bother to. They can’t issue too many summons cos they don’t want look too obvious in certain ‘action’. So they can only bully the commons lo..
