Who Determines Malaysian History?
June 4, 2008
So who determines what goes into our history books? Is it wise old historians living on mountain tops collating the history of our country?
Or *gasp*, is it determined by politicians, especially those from the ruling party?
Here’s your answer, contained in the latest Malaysiakini report on UMNO Youth’s efforts to ‘build our nation’.
Umno Youth’s secretariat for nation-building will embark on a fact-finding mission based on the history of the formation of Malaysia and drafting of the Federal Constitution.
The working committee, headed by Wan Azizi Wan Mohd, will collect information and provide suggestions on issues that concern nation building.
So far, everything’s OK. It gets worse.
“We have three objectives. The main objective is to comprehensively educate (the public) on building a Malaysian nation,” said Wan Azizi.
He lamented that “the younger generation especially does not seem to understand the basis of our constitution, which is a constitutional monarchy”.
The Agong is the leader of the armed forces and the official religion of the country, and the Sultans have the same jurisdiction in their respective states. Did I miss out other important details, or are Malaysian youths more clueless than I? If UMNO Youth is talking about recent cases of disrespecting the royalty, one doesn’t have to go far back into history and study the cases of our current and previous Prime Minister who has defied the royalty before. Maybe UMNO Youth should start by educating their senior counterparts?
He stressed that there is a need to understand the social contract that Malaysians have agreed upon.
“We will concentrate on the rights of the monarchy, Malay rights, issues concerning transparency, the federation’s official religion, and relations with other races.
“(We will also) suggest measures for nation building over the next 50 years. What is Malaysia going to look like 50 years from now?”
There you go again. Social contract. Hak-hak keistimewaan (which most people talk about, but is never defined clearly). Everyday fare from Utusan Malaysia. Since this is UMNO Youth, they just want to brainwash the youths not to question the NEP, even though it is not even in the constitution. And how do they brainwash youths?
Wan Azizi said that the History subject in school would be reviewed if needs be.
So, anymore doubts on who determines what goes into our country’s history books?

Our history books are designed to brain-wash & ‘manufacture’ the type of citizens that BN wants; united yet divided by religion and ethnicity!
