UiTM - Universiti Teknologi MUNDUR
August 14, 2008
Yesterday, 3000 UiTM (Universiti Teknologi Mundur) students marched to the Menteri Besar’s office to submit a memorandum protesting Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim’s proposal to open the university to 10% non-bumiputeras. (Try to get these 3000 students to protest government wastage, and you won’t get more than 100 tops).
I fully support the Universiti Teknologi Mundur students’ actions to protest this obviously useless proposal. What a stupid idea! Does Khalid Ibrahim know what he is doing? Let me outline why I think it is a stupid idea.
Universiti Teknologi Mundur, or more commonly known as UiTM, is one of the model universities in this country, and should be emulated by all other universities in this country.
Firstly, unlike other public universities, there is no racial bias or racially-charged incidents in Universiti Teknologi Mundur. In there, mostly everyone is of the same race, and they live as one big happy family. Except the ‘mak nyahs’. These low-lifes hang around in a different clique.
Secondly, unlike other public universities, UiTM is famous for making the news for the wrong reasons, which makes the school more famous and glamer. Unlike other more stellar universities like UM, UPM, or UKM who produce some decent research, UiTM is more famous for the following ‘great’ idea (Description is my own):
Introducing courses for blogging
The aim of this class is to enable bloggers to be more ethical and professional. To get an A in this class, you will have to start an account in blogger.com and just copy and paste any article you read in utusan.com.my. To keep the professionalism, don’t add any personal comments, and disable all commenting for the post. To get an A+, praise Abdullah Ahmad Badawi every 2 posts.
Lastly, Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim should realize that Universiti Teknologi Mundur is THE LAST RESORT for Malay students. This means that if they fail to get into any other public university (maybe due to lousy grades), UiTM will still take those reject students, or else, this will be the end of the Malay race. But don’t quote me on that. The esteemed vice-chancellor, Dr Ibrahim Abu Shah said so himself:
Mingguan Malaysia quoted Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) vice-chancellor Datuk Seri Prof Dr Ibrahim Abu Shah as saying that the university could never be open to non-bumiputras.
He said UiTM was a bumiputra institution and its exclusivity should be defended at all times.
“UiTM is the last resort for Malay students. If we dismantle this, that is the end of the Malays,” he said when presenting a paper at the Bumiputra Economic Convention 2008 on Saturday.
Fellow readers, I hope you can understand why I am so upset at Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim’s proposal. To introduce non-bumiputeras will destroy the laid-back culture and lack of competitiveness that UiTM has worked so hard to build and foster.
There has been a lot of online backlash against the 3000 protesting students, but I hope you can put yourself in their shoes, as I have. In fact, there is now a campaign to throw UiTM graduate’s resumes into dustbins. I mean, come on, such a campaign will not hurt UiTM graduates! They will just go ahead and apply for jobs in the government and government-linked companies lah! Takut apa? Who wants to work for those private-sector pompous asses anyway. Long hours, no tea-break, WTF?
To any other doubters out there, my brothers and sisters from UiTM and I have this message: “Kalau you tak suka, balik China/India!”
Capiche?
* I know that there are many capable UiTM students and graduates out there in the real world. Unfortunately, you let 3000 of your fellow students dictate how the country now sees you, because you have chosen to be silent. So, speak up.

what a big hu-ha! i’ve spoken up in my entry - UiTM Juniors… Think Before You Act!. at least that’s what i can do as a super duper senior!
irrational and a bit stupid i would say. how come you walked on street to protest whilst you don’t understand the legal aspect of your institution (which is UiTM Act 2000)? is it so easy to amend the law without joining the federal government?

Actually a lot of HR do throw out local grad (esp a certain race) resume without even looking. Regarded like spam mail.

I am sorry but this is true, my department looking for fresh grade and my singapore boss asked me to interview some of them. Then i look at those stacking resumes,i told my boss that kind of too much. He said filter those from MARA first, cause HR told him they have meet the quota.

suealeen,
I think you’ve done as much as you could as a senior to let your juniors know that their actions are just giving Malaysians a bad impression of the school.
That they get hijacked for political purposes so easily is also regrettable. If possible, get more UiTM seniors to speak up, or like you said, all the effort to build a good name goes to waste because of a few thousand people.

Yes, i agree with you. Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim is not thinking clearly. If Universiti Teknologi MUNDUR is to open it’s door to 10% non-bumi, then those 10% non-bumi will also face the same fate as the other students from UiTM, which is getting rejects after rejects at every single interviews.

Gosh, this is embarrassing!
It was a mere proposal, not in full effect yet. Why so serious?
These students should have thought about their future. With them yelling and demo-ing, employers are having second thoughts to employ them.
What happened to talking/discussing?

For a moment while reading the description for the blogging course I was wondering if they really did condone plagiarism.
Then of course I read the whole thing in its entirety properly and realised it was a joke. Much like the course itself.
Had a bit of a chuckle.

I’d like to go back to China but they wouldn’t have me. They’re too busy with that silly Olympics thing. Guess I’ll just have to settle for being a second class citizen in the country my forefathers helped build. Or did they?

B.H,
We’ll have to ask the forefathers la.
Keen,
If they cite references and summarize the article, then I guess it’s not plagiarism anymore right? Hehe.
nami,
UiTM good school mah, why you left!
Noktah,
Now the politicians and Malay NGOs (all linked to UMNO) have jumped onto the bandwagon to submit memorandum to Agong and this and that. I honestly had no idea UiTM was such a golden goose.

I am Malay. I feel so embarassed by this but at least I’m from a private Uni. My sister who’s a law grad from UiTM, class of 02′ I think, is deeply humiliated.
These 3000, they’re from the kampung lah. Narrow minded, rascist fuckers.

i am a uitm student. but don’t agree with the over reaction of the fellow students.
personally, i do think that it is a great idea to open up 10% of the quota. besides integration, it will definitely bring along a very good competition among students.
after all, it is just 10% and there is nothing to shout about…or maybe, is it because these students [who thought they are heroes championing uitm] are afraid that if the quota is to be opened, then 10% of bright graduates will be monopolized by non-bumiputeras?
aiyo.. i was thinking after reading the newspaper, will the reaction be the same if UMNO leaders are the one who made such statement? i don’t think so…
after all, as a UiTM student myself, I think the real reason why the students gathered at the SUK were to skip their class.. UiTM lectures start at 8.30 until 10.30 for the first session and 10.30 to 12.30 for the second session.
As the Perhimpunan was held from 7.00 am to 10.30 am, well, maybe my assumption is right..haha…
Anyway, not all students actually disagree with the suggestion by the MB. We really think that we need to mingle. I asked my friends and most of them supported the idea. After all, we had been pampered and spoon fed for so long and we really need to be ready to face the globalisation world that await us.
And I can’t help but to say, how paranoid the 5000 students who demonstrated and the VC was… I mean, it was just a mere suggestion and they know that the MB can’t do anything more but just talk. So, what’s the fuss all along?
But to be honest, not all UiTM students are that racists and second class. I could read law at other institutions with my grades, but as UiTM law faculty is among the most established law faculty in Malaysia, I still love this university.
But I hate the narrow minded students with 3rd class mentality who had humiliated me with their over reactions. Just imagine, when paople asked me, what I do, I said law, and they were impressed. But when I said that I read law in UiTM, they drew weird face and they asked me “Why UiTM?!!”….

I am a Universiti Teknologi Mara [UiTM] student. A law student to be exact. But I don’t agree with the over reaction of my fellow UiTM students.
Personally, I do think that it is a great IDEA to open up 10% of the quota. Besides integration, it will definitely give UiTM a new way of work and study culture as well as a very good competition among students.
It is just 10% and there is nothing to shout about… Or maybe, is it because [like a friend of mine said] these students [who thought they are heroes championing UiTM] are afraid that if the quota is to be opened, then 10% of top places in exam results will be monopolized by non-Bumiputeras? If that’s the reason, then it is good. It will make Bumiputera students study harder to gain good grades.
I was thinking after reading the newspaper, will the reaction be the same if UMNO leaders are the one who made such statement? I don’t think so… Even there was not as much fuss as this time when Dr. Mahathir first made such statement in 2003 [as reported in today's Star].
Maybe the real reason the students gathered at the SUK that morning was to skip their class.. Lectures in UiTM start at 8.30 a.m until 10.30 a.m for the first session and 10.30 a.m to 12.30 p.m for the second session.
As the ‘Perhimpunan’ was held from 7.00 am to 10.30 am, well, maybe the crowd who went there were those who had classes at 8.30 - 10.30… Haha.. Just a wild assumption. It might not be true.. ;p
Anyway, not all students actually disagree with the suggestion by the MB. Some of us really think that we need to mingle. I asked my friends and most of them supported the idea. After all, the students had been pampered and spoon fed for so long and a new culture need to be inculcate so that the students will be ready to face the globalisation world that await them [including me, of course..].
And I can’t help but to say, how paranoid the 5000 students who demonstrated and the VC was… I mean, it was just a mere suggestion and they know that the MB can’t do anything more than just, well,… talk. So, what’s the fuss all about?
But to be honest, not all UiTM students are that racists and second class. I could read law at other institutions with my grades, but as UiTM law faculty is among the most established law faculty in Malaysia, I read law here. Even when people asked me many times why I chose UiTM, when I told them I read law here, they understand me. And that is why, I love the university.
But to my fellow friends, please don’t over react… Act wisely… If you can demonstrated for UiTM, where were you when students from other institutions demonstrated in front of the Parliament regarding AUKU?…. -_-

Dear writer,
There’s a BIG problem if the dissenting minority speak up thier minds about the 10% issue. They might be expelled from UiTM. The VC said so during the Wacana Article 153 held in Annex Hall!!
I bet the right minded minority can hardly wait to grad! Campus Life must be hard for them..
