Happy Malaysia Day - Analyzing Anwar’s Press Conference
September 16, 2008
First of all, Happy Malaysia Day. Back in 1963, this was the day that the country as we know now, Malaysia, was formed. I believe this is the first time I am wishing anyone anything on a September 16th. This is due to my lack of understanding of how important this day could be for Malaysians, especially those in Sabah and Sarawak. The historical importance of this day has been underplayed for too long, and I think most of everyone living in the peninsular are partially responsible for this.
After listening to Anwar Ibrahim’s press conference just a moment ago, I cannot help but think how wonderful it would be if September 16th 2008 goes down into the history books as the day Barisan Nasional fell. Alas, Anwar’s press conference was just a rehash of what he has been proclaiming the past few months, with the common refrain: “We have the numbers.”
Don’t get me wrong. I support Anwar Ibrahim, and I see him as a shining beacon of hope that will chase away the darkness called Barisan Nasional. But in my mind, there still seems to be many things that put doubt into his claims.
For example, today, he announced that he will seek a meeting with PM Abdullah Badawi to discuss the transition of power. He even said that he will reveal his defector list to the PM if he wants to see it. Personally, I think this is more of a bluff. Assuming that Anwar doesn’t have all the numbers yet, he is putting the ball into AAB’s court, possibly with the assumption that AAB will certainly not meet him. I think this is a brilliant tactic, as I doubt if AAB has the courage to call Anwar’s bluff, knowing that he prefers to shy away from the tough decisions rather than tackle them headfirst.
Also, Anwar has claimed that he already had the numbers long time ago, so my question is, why now? Why not try to meet the PM during the last Parliament sitting, so that September 16th 2008 will be for you to proclaim PR as the new government? The only explanation I can think of is that there might be some logistical problems, but the most obvious answer is that he doesn’t have the numbers yet. I’m quite a fan of Occam’s razor, btw.
In the shortest term, I will only be certain that Anwar has the numbers when the PM accepts his invitation to meet, and Anwar goes along to the meeting. Otherwise, me, like any other clueless Malaysian out there will just be guessing. And I do hope Anwar Ibrahim proves me wrong, and makes a mockery of this post.

Anwar is not the head og government, yet.
The government has plenty of tricks to stop this takeover. ISA, Emergency, Parliament and many more.
Anwar may have the numbers but Parliament is not in session. Come 13 October, we might see a vote of no confidence against him and probably only then will all the MPs be revealed.
I can easily see the headline of The Star reads “Toppling the government is a threat to National Security” and a massive arrest under ISA.
Meeting the Agong might be a solution but nobody knows what the Agong will decide. He might reject it and the name list will be published as government has insiders in the palace.
The best chance is October 13. Abdullah will not step down without a fight. He’s not giving up despite running the country into the ground. Who’s to say he will not take extreme measures.
Look at the ISA arrest, the people are powerless, they can’t do anyting. After all, they voted BN into office.

yup i agree with you. i dont think anwar has the numbers as yet, perhaps the BN Mps still need much convincing.
however looking at the way things are not, the government under BN is already in a panic mode. anwar shouldnt take a long time to finally take over the government.

Regarding the number, I am believing at 50-50 only. I’m not so convince that he has the numbers but hoping that he got the number and add this significant event to Malaysia History.

I second the doubt you all had. But probably he has some deeper strategy. Create panic and havoc in BN first and follow by a surprise swoop from another angle?
But hell, this government really need some cleaning. I hope this Anwar Bleach will work!

If he already had the numbers from awhile ago why wait till now? To make a dramatic and timely statement? As much as I am for change, this looks like a game of pokai poker.
I call for meeting. You say show me the names. If you have the names, no need for meeting? And so on and so forth.

The art of war
Quickly make the opponent weak
In their eyes they see the bogeyman
Running after them
Sleepless nights
The mind growing weak
The body eroding of self renewal
It comes out stupid in administration
The art of war
It makes the enemy seeing shadows
Every corner in its power
It is the devil coming for souls
So they issue statements
Denying the road to doom
For the internal squabbling arising
The weights and measures unbalancing
The leaders dare not say the truth
On the ground many want to believe
The day it will happen in our eyes
The ‘Titanic’ is sinking fast
Rushing water sending out signals
For the wrong direction
The art of war
Make the enemy knows his glory
When he is sleeping
Take over his kingdom
